Two Mexican gray wolves found dead
Defenders of Wildlife offers up to $10K for information on wolf killings

TUCSON, Ariz. (July 7, 2010) – Defenders of Wildlife is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for killing two perilously endangered Mexican gray wolves in the past two weeks in Arizona and New Mexico. In combination with rewards from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the states of Arizona and New Mexico, other conservation organizations and individuals, Defenders’ offer brings the total reward offered to $52,000.

The following is a statement from Eva Sargent, Defenders of Wildlife’s Southwest program director:

“Now that the alpha males of two packs have been killed, the fatherless pups of one of the most endangered animals in the world are less likely to survive. With so few Mexican gray wolves remaining in the wild, every wolf – especially the alpha males – is crucial to the survival of the species.

“These latest killings, along with the sobering statistic that illegal wolf killings are the leading cause of death for Mexican gray wolves, highlight the urgent need for greater law enforcement capacity at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“Meanwhile, the Fish and Wildlife Service should work quickly to develop and implement a scientific recovery plan that keeps Mexican gray wolves from spiraling toward extinction and helps to set them on the road to recovery.”

Summary

• Between 1998 and June 2009, 31 Mexican gray wolves were illegally killed by poachers
• The Mexican gray wolf is one of the most endangered wolves in the world; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service counted just 42 wolves in the wild last year
• There have been only two prosecutions for illegal wolf killings, the leading cause of death among Mexican gray wolves
• More law enforcement presence is needed to solve these crimes and to protect Mexican gray wolves from poaching

Dog and Animal Rescue and Adoption – Pryor’s Planet.

Richard Pryor was an amazing, talented human being. He cared about all creatures. I am humbled by his work and the work that his wife, Jennifer, continues to do.

It saddens me that there is such a need for organizations like Pryor’s Planet. All animals deserve kindness and compassion.

Jennifer carries on – helping the animals and keeping Richard Pryor’s legacy alive.

It is an amazing organization and she is an amazing woman.

Bosses at Sutherland estate cry off wolf plan

Introducing wolves to Alladale remains a long-term plan of the estate. An estate has shelved a plan to introduce four wolves from Romania into a secure area. Alladale Estate, at Ardgay in Sutherland, said the proposal had been dropped in the interests of the animals’ welfare.

General manager Hugh Fullerton-Smith said it was still the long-term ambition of the estate to introduce wolves, but into a much larger area. Alladale has a separate plan to release European bison on to its land.

Mr Fullerton-Smith said the plan for the wolves was to use information on them in outreach education projects. But he said: “We studied very carefully small enclosures throughout Britain and to be frank we weren’t comfortable about bringing them into very small enclosures on welfare grounds.”

The Wolves Ontario! project was initiated in August 2000, through a grant from the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation. The Wolves Ontario! project is one of the main campaigns of Earthroots.

The project was created due to the dire situation facing wolves in Ontario. The public remains largely unaware of the challenges faced by the wolves of Ontario. It is clear from population biology studies that wolves as predators, play a crucial role in the delicate balance of wildlife populations. Yet Ontario’s wildlife laws do not provide any protection to wolves that range beyond limited park areas. The wolves of Algonquin Park are regularly hunted when they cross park boundaries. Even more unfortunate is that the Ontario government is now opening existing parks, including wilderness parks, to sport hunting. This means that the few wolf refuges in Ontario may soon be gone.

Since August, the Wolves Ontario! project has developed a full colour wolf fact sheet; distribution of 40 000 copies of this fact sheet across the province is well underway. Earthroots expects to generate a high number of letters to the Minister of Natural Resources, John Snobelen, from this venture. Postcards have also been developed and distributed, indicating to Minister Snobelen, high public support for increased wolf protection. Recently, letters to the editor of all daily and community newspapers in the province were sent out outlining Earthroots’ concerns about the provincial government’s lack of protective wolf legislation. Please see the Algonquin wolves section of the website for a recent victory.

The Wolves Ontario! project is the only campaign in Ontario that is currently seeking measurable protection for wolves on a provincial level. Earthroots leads the fight to protect Ontario wolves.
